73rd Birthday: United States Air Force
The United States Air Force, officially founded on September 18, 1947, will celebrate its 73rd birthday this month. The U.S. military purchased its first aircraft in 1909, but the Air Force did not become a separate, independent organization for another 38 years. During WWII, President Truman realized the value of airpower, leading him to sign the National Security Act, which established the US Air Force as an independent service, equal to the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
The official Air Force birthday is recognized as September 18, 1947, which is the date of the passage of the National Security Act of 1947. That legislation created what would later become to known as the United States Department of Defense and established the United States Air Force as a separate branch of military service. Before the creation of the Air Force, the military’s flying operations were handled by the U.S. Army on land and the Navy by sea. The 73rd Air Force Day will be celebrated on Friday, September 18, 2020. Read more at militarybenefits.info/air-force-birthday.
