Veteran of the Month

Lester Raeford

Congratulations to Lester Raeford, who is the VCC veteran of the month for October. Lester served in the army during the Korean Conflict. He spent the majority of his time as a gunner in the mortar platoon, which primarily involved stocking and loading ammunition. He was stationed at the shower point. Companies would come in to shower and get a clean change of clothes. Lester was responsible for laundering shorts.

When Lester arrived back in the states he was discharged right away. His only daughter left for college and Lester went to working driving a truck. After a few years he then began a career in manufacturing which spanned more than two decades.

When not working, Lester and his wife, Ernestine, were very involved in mission and volunteer work through their church. The couple truly loved helping others. They also travelled to Virginia and Georgia.

Married for more than 63 years, Lester’s wife passed in February 2014. He now spends his days at home enjoying visits from his daughter, two grandchildren and great grandchild. Lester is very thankful of the assistance and guidance he has received from VCC. He is grateful for the ability to remain living at home for the care that VCC provides.
