On November 10, 1775, a group of men gathered at Tun Tavern, a brew house located on Philadelphia’s historic waterfront, to form the Continental Marines. Their purpose was to provide additional support to the newly formed Continental Navy.  Commandant Samuel Nicholas first led just over 2,100 servicemen participating in battles throughout the Revolutionary War, but the Continental Marines were disbanded upon the end of the conflict.  July 11, 1798, The Marine Corps was established, and throughout the 19th century, this would be the date marines celebrated the founding of the Corps.  But in 1921, Major Edwin North McClellan proposed the anniversary instead be designated on November 10th. Since then, the United States Marine Corp birthday traditions range from fancy balls in their dress blues to an elaborate cake cutting ceremony. To Celebrate the Marine Corp Birthday this year, they are unveiling a brand-new birthday running cadence. Happy 245th Birthday to the United States Marine Corps!
