Veteran of the Month – Gustave Bartels
Gustave entered the service September 17, 1952 and took basic training in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
Corporal Bartels arrived in Korea March 20, 1953. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service against the enemy in the Korean campaign. The citation said that Corporal Bartels distinguished himself serving as a liaison specialist in the field artillery battalion of the Forty-Fifth Infantry Division. Corporal Bartels worked industriously to assure maximum efficiency in battalion communications, repeatedly exhibiting his initiative and technical skills.
“Competent and dependable, he often performed his duties under enemy fire and hazardous weather conditions and never failed to accomplish his mission.”
Corporal Bartels arrived back into the United States December 17, 1953 after sustaining injuries during his service.
Gustave married Maureen Mahanna and they raised five children together. Gustave currently resides in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. He loves to watch sports, talk to his grandchildren and take walks in his neighborhood.
