Veterans Care Coordination™ is proud to partner with quality providers nationwide who share the same passion as VCC in making it easier for wartime Veterans to age at home.

Veterans Day, observed on November 11th, is dedicated to honoring the sacrifice and service of those who have fought for our freedom. For home care companies, particularly those that support aging wartime Veterans, this day presents an important opportunity to celebrate their clients and acknowledge their distinctive contributions to the nation.

The care provided to Veterans goes beyond physical and medical support. It also includes emotional care, community connection, and honoring the legacy and service of those who have fought for our freedom. For home care companies, especially those supporting aging wartime Veterans, this day provides an important opportunity to celebrate their clients and recognize their unique contributions to the nation.

Here are a few meaningful ways home care companies can honor their Veteran clients, their families, and the local community during the upcoming Veterans Day:

  1. Personalized Recognition Ceremonies- Host small ceremonies for Veterans in their homes or community centers. Gather caregivers, family members, and local Veterans organizations to share stories, present certificates of appreciation, and offer small tokens of gratitude, like custom-made flags or military-themed mementos. The ceremony can include a moment of silence to honor the Veteran’s service or a flag-folding presentation to pay tribute to their contributions.
  2. Create a Veterans Memory Wall- Help create a visual tribute to each Veteran’s service by setting up a memory wall with photos, medals, or memorabilia. This display can be part of the home care office, the Veteran’s home, or even featured in a local community center where neighbors and friends can join in the appreciation. Family members can participate by sharing stories, old letters, or significant items representing their loved one’s time in service.
  3. Community and Family Involvement- Invite local schools, churches, or civic organizations to participate in writing letters of thanks, creating artwork, or even hosting virtual or in-person events that honor Veterans. By engaging the community, home care companies foster intergenerational connections and help the families of Veterans see the widespread respect for their loved ones’ service. Coordinating a family day where caregivers, Veterans, and their families come together for a day of appreciation can create lasting memories.
  4. Honor Through Storytelling- Encourage Veterans to share their stories. Many older Veterans have incredible tales of courage and camaraderie that can inspire younger generations. A home care company could arrange for local media outlets, Veterans organizations, or schools to record or write down these stories, preserving them for future generations. Involving family members in this process allows for the passing of history and heritage, helping younger generations understand the sacrifices made by their loved ones.
  5. Community Parades or Virtual Tributes- While some Veterans may be unable to attend public events, home care companies can help arrange safe, accessible participation in local parades or events. Alternatively, if a Veteran prefers to stay home, virtual tributes are an option. Organize online gatherings or video calls where community members and family can celebrate the Veteran, play music, and deliver messages of thanks.
  6. Provide Additional Support for Families- Veterans Day can be a bittersweet time for families. Offering them respite care or support services on or around Veterans Day allows them to reflect on their loved one’s service without the pressures of daily caregiving responsibilities. Small gestures like sending a care package to families or organizing a social event with other Veteran families can create a sense of community and shared experience.

By taking the time to recognize the service of our aging Veterans, home care companies strengthen their connection to the Veteran community, demonstrating a commitment that goes beyond caregiving—they show deep gratitude and respect for a lifetime of service. Involving families and the community ensures these honored Veterans are remembered and appreciated by all. On Veterans Day, let’s express our appreciation for the brave men and women who selflessly served, honoring their courage and sacrifices. This recognition ensures that the aging Veterans we support daily feel truly valued and respected.
